NICU: ‘A Life In Between’

A Collaboration Between Families, NICU Teams and Positive Exposure

Walk into any neonatal intensive care unit and you'll witness something extraordinary: strangers caring for the most vulnerable members of our community with a devotion that transcends profession. It's this profound humanity, so often hidden behind hospital doors, that inspired the project, The NICU: A Life in Between.

Through the lens of photographer Rick Guidotti from Positive Exposure, we set out to capture what families and healthcare workers experience every day in the NICU: not just medical miracles, but moments of resilience, connection, and hope.

Getting There On Time

Rick Rader, MD, FAAIDD, FAADM, Editor-in-chief, Helen Journal: “We were reminded of the importance of timing in milestone events. Following marriage, the next significant ‘get me there on time,’ event was the birth of the baby. The “timing” of staying in the oven until it was safe to come out and explore has not always been observed…Preterm birth is when a baby is born too early, before 37 weeks of pregnancy have been completed. In 2022, preterm birth affected about 1 of every 10 infants born in the United States.”
